On average, brits spend a staggering £700 more in December than they do in any other month of the year - as expected, the cost of December has never been higher in 2024. With energy costs rising quickly, and council tax set to increase across the region by 2.9% for 2024/2025 - Christmas this year is coming with a heavy price tag.

This week, we're sharing the best budget friendly (yet AMAZING) food across Newcastle and the North East, so we can save our pennies without missing out.

Grainger Market

Dog friendly? Sadly not, and it doesn't look like they will be anytime soon πŸ’”
Family friendly? VERY family friendly
Accessible? Yes - the market is accessed via ramp and all one-level.

The Grainger Market offers different budget-friendly options in a magical victorian setting, having first opened its doors for trading back in 1835. If you need a quick weekend stop-off for under a tenner, you can grab a coffee (£2.80), a pizza slice (£3.50) and some local grown veg (£1 bags) without breaking into another note. We will meet you there...

Top Pick: Pizza by the Slice - £3.50 per slice

The Quayside Market

Dog friendly? Yes! Bring along your furry friend for a stroll.
Family friendly? Absolutely – a fun outing for everyone.
Accessible? Yes, though it’s worth noting that some cobbled areas may be tricky for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Every Sunday, the Quayside comes alive with a vibrant market offering a mix of handmade crafts, vintage treasures, and (most importantly) delicious food stalls that won't break the bank. Whether you're in the market for a hot cup of cider or loaded Yorkshire pud wrap, there's hopefully something here to suit every taste and budget.

Top Pick: Gourmet Sausage Rolls – £4 each

Sambuca, Heaton

Dog friendly? Service dogs only.
Family friendly? A big yes – the more, the merrier!
Accessible? Yes, with step-free access.

Sambuca has earned its reputation as the ultimate destination for affordable Italian dining in the North East. When I first moved here, I couldn't believe how many of these restaurants I would come across on a daily basis. Known for its generous portions and unbeatable prices, it’s a great choice for a no-fuss festive meal.

The early bird menu offers three courses for £7.95, meaning you can enjoy classic pasta dishes, hearty risottos, and indulgent desserts without blowing the budget.

Top Pick: Lasagna – £5.50 for a hearty portion

Northumberland Street Christmas Market

Dog friendly?
Unfortunately not – it gets quite crowded and stressful for the pups.
Family friendly? Yes, especially for those with older kids who love festive treats.
Accessible? Yes – the area is pedestrianized with flat access.

For a real festive feast, head to the Northumberland Street Christmas Market, where food stalls are bursting with seasonal delights. From bratwurst sausages to churros dripping in chocolate, it’s a winter wonderland for foodies. If you're looking to save, many vendors offer sample-sized portions, perfect for sharing and tasting a bit of everything.

Top Pick: Festive Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream – £4

Big River Bakery, Shieldfield

Dog friendly? Service dogs only.
Family friendly? Absolutely – a welcoming spot for all ages.
Accessible? Yes, with step-free access.

Known for its mission to bring communities together through wholesome, affordable baking, Big River Bakery is a gem. They specialize in locally-sourced, freshly-baked goods that don’t cost a fortune. From Northumberland stotties to their legendary pies, every bite seems crafted with love. Pop in for a warming lunch, and you can walk out with change from a fiver.

Top Pick: Sausage Stottie – £3.75

Cook House, Ouseburn

Dog friendly? Dogs are welcome in the outside area.
Family friendly? Perfect for a relaxed meal with the kids.
Accessible? Yes, but check ahead if you need specific assistance.

Nestled in a quirky converted shipping container, Cook House offers a cozy atmosphere with a focus on simple, seasonal dishes. While it’s known for its weekend brunches, their affordable small plates make it an ideal spot for sharing and sampling new flavors. It’s proof that high-quality food doesn’t have to come with a high price tag.

Top Pick: Soup of the Day with Fresh Bread – £6

Kiln, Ouseburn

Dog friendly? Dogs are welcome in the bar area.
Family friendly? Yes, though it’s better for older kids or a relaxed adults-only outing.
Accessible? Partially – call ahead for details.

Kiln is a hidden treasure offering a unique blend of handcrafted ceramics and incredible food. Their small plates and sandwiches are flavorful, fresh, and surprisingly affordable. Everything here is made from scratch, including the ceramics you eat from, adding a personal touch to every meal.

Top Pick: Feta and Pomegranate Flatbread – £7

Tynemouth Market

Dog friendly? Yes! Perfect for a Saturday stroll with your pup.
Family friendly? Absolutely – something for everyone.
Accessible? Yes – though some parts of the station are uneven.

For a weekend outing, Tynemouth Market offers everything from vintage finds to delicious street food. Grab a cup of artisan coffee and a bite to eat while browsing the stalls. Whether it’s a fresh sourdough sandwich or a cheeky dessert, you’ll find plenty of tasty options for under a tenner.

Top Pick: Homemade Quiche Slice – £4

Prohibition Cabaret Bar, Pink Lane

Dog friendly? Yes! Bring your pup along.
Family friendly? Not suitable for young kids, but great for adults.
Accessible? Yes, with step-free access.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit different, Prohibition Cabaret Bar offers an affordable food-and-drink experience with a side of quirky charm. While the main draw is the entertainment, their budget-friendly snack options make it a great spot for a casual bite. Think loaded nachos, sharing platters, and comforting toasties – all served with a smile.

Top Pick: Cheese Toastie and Soup Combo – £5

That should help you keep the festivities bright without dimming your wallet! Have other hidden gems or secret deals we’ve missed? Let us know at @thetoondiaries or drop your recommendations below!

If you’re a busy dog lover living in the North East, you'll know that luckilly, our region isn’t just for humans. We boast a never-ending list of dog-friendly spots, perfect for a pup with a case of the zoomies.

Here are five of our favourite dog-friendly walks in Newcastle that are just as good for you as they are for your pup.

Stroll in the City at Leazes Park

Set just minutes from St. James’ Park, Leazes Park is a gem that feels miles away from the city’s hustle and bustle. It's rare that a city offers as much as this in the nature department - offering a tranquil lake, open green spaces, and winding paths - it's a much-loved Geordie staple and for good reason, too.

Highlights: Ducks to watch (from a safe distance!) & lots of shady spots for cooling off in summer.

Pro tip: Keep an eye on your pup near the water—it’s great for a photo op, but not every dog fancies a swim!

Jesmond Dene's Old Mill & Waterfall

Jesmond Dene is a haven for all dog owners, offering an accessible escape from the city. This woodland valley is packed with walking trails, babbling brooks, and charming bridges. It’s an off-leash paradise (in designated areas), so your pup can enjoy a proper snoop about.

Doggy highlights: Smells galore, plenty of space to run, and the Old Mill for some pics.

Pro tip: Stop by Pet’s Corner, a mini zoo, for a peek at farm animals (but no pup visitors allowed inside I'm afraid).

Freedom to Roam on Town Moor

A personal favourite - this one is for dogs with energy to burn. Town Moor offers an expansive open field perfect for fetch, zoomies, and socialising. Just north of the city centre, and accessed by a 5 minute walk from West Jesmond Metro station - this vast space has an almost countryside feel without leaving the city.

Doggy highlights: Endless space to run, fresh air, and the chance to meet other friendly pups.

Pro tip: It’s super open, so windy days can be a challenge—dress warmly and maybe bring a ball to keep your dog focused on you!

Riverside Walks at The Quayside

For more of a city vibe, take your pup for a stroll along the Newcastle Quayside. Start at the Tyne Bridge, and follow the riverside path past the Baltic Centre and Millennium Bridge for the best views. It’s a sensory delight for dogs who love people-watching and sniffing new smells.

Doggy highlights: Water views, street performers, and maybe even a cheeky treat from one of the dog-friendly cafes.

Pro tip: Weekend markets can get busy, so keep a lead handy to navigate crowds easily.

History Hunting in Ouseburn Valley

Culture & Canines, what could go wrong. Ouseburn Valley is a quirky and vibrant area to explore. This historic hub is brimming with character, from graffiti-covered walls to hidden paths along the Ouseburn River.

Doggy highlights: A mix of urban and natural scenery, cool breezes along the river, and dog-friendly pubs to end the day right.

Pro tip: Don’t miss Seven Stories or The Cluny’s outdoor seating, both welcoming to well-behaved pups.

Everyone loves a facial - unfortunately, it's not the most affordable purchase, especially in the early months of the year when we tend to need the relaxation the most.

Thankfully, Newcastle has some amazing spots where you can grab a skincare or make-up trial with a professional —without spending a penny. It's a great way to test products before purchasing, and also get a better idea of what's right for your skin from the trained professionals.

Here’s a roundup of our favourite places in Newcastle where you can bag yourself a free facial or makeover.

Clinique at John Lewis

πŸ“ Eldon Square
Price range: Free!

Clinique is renowned around the world for their skincare and makeup, and their team in John Lewis Eldon Square offer free skin consultations and even facials, too. They offer a 15-minute express facial designed to cleanse, hydrate, and refresh your skin—perfect for a quick beauty boost.

Toon Tip: Clinique often offers free makeup consultations alongside their facials, so make sure to ask for a makeover while you’re there.

The Body Shop at Eldon Square

πŸ“ Eldon Square Shopping Centre
Price range: Free!

Even though The Body Shop have faced issues in the last few years, I'm happy to say they're still going strong. If you prefer using natural and cruelty-free products, The Body Shop is a great choice. They offer complimentary mini facials tailored to your skin type, which include cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising treatments.

Toon Tip: Sign up for their loyalty program for discounts and sneak peeks of upcoming beauty events where you might score even more free treatments

Lush Cosmetics

πŸ“ Northumberland Street
Price range: Free!

We all know a trip to Lush can be a wild one even at the quietest of times, however it's well worth a visit. They are famous for their handmade products, and they will happily talk you through their approach while you can grab a free skin consultation at their Northumberland Street store.

Toon Tip: The products can actually be made there and then - so if you're after something abit unique, go ahead and be specific - they might have just the thing.

MAC Cosmetics at Fenwick

πŸ“ Fenwick Newcastle
Price range: Free!

MAC at the Newcastle staple - Fenwick (usually known as Fenwicks completely by accident)- offers a free 30-minute makeover when you purchase a product. So, although it's not technically free - it’s the perfect opportunity to try out their other makeup and get some expert tips.

Toon tip: You don’t even have to make a big purchase—grab a lipstick or mascara, and the full makeover comes along with it.

Boots No7 Counter

πŸ“ Various Locations (including Eldon Square & Gateshead MetroCentre)
Price range: Free!

I once spent a Christmas period working as a Boots’ No7 artist, and I can confirm their products are worth the hype. Their counters offer free beauty consultations with skin assessments, including finding out your skin tone using a fancy tool (they are friendly with the samples, too).

Toon tip: No7 is keen with their offers - regularly holding beauty events and promotions. So keep an eye out for extra perks like vouchers and online deals, too.
